Maharastra, literally means the Great Nation, is a large western Indian state. The state is known for its forts, hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, caves and other heritage sites. Also home to the Bollywood movies, Mumbai (Bombay) is the state capital.

The state boasts of four World Heritage Sites in India , three of them are rock cut cave temples (Ajanta, Ellora & Elephanta) and the Mumbai (Bombay) railway station Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus).

Apart from this the state is popular for a series of forts, numbering well over two dozens. Many of them were built on the rough terrain and sea facing.

Maharastra has some unusual suspects its is offering for the visitors. The Lonar crater in Buldhana district is a circular lake (about 1.8 kilometers /1.1 miles in diameter) was created due to a meteoroid impact some 50 thousand years ago. By the way this giant meteoroid is still embedded somewhere deep under the lakebed.

A great number of long distance trains in India radiates from Mumbai. So are the international and domestic air connections .

That makes Mumbai an ideal gateway point for India. In fact the Gateway of India at the Mumbai harbor that was built in 1927 to receive King George V and Queen Mary of Briton still attract huge number of tourists to Mumbai. Ironically the last British troops to leave India too passed through this gateway in 1948 !
Mumbai ( Bombay ) is the state capital of Maharastra as well as the financial capital of India.
